How to Spot a Dangerous Tree: A Guide for Hampshire Homeowners

We know how important trees are, and we will always try and preserve for future generations. But the sad fact is, they can sometimes pose a risk to your property and safety. Whether through age, weather damage or disease, trees aren’t as invincible as they look! Knowing how to identify potentially dangerous trees is so crucial for every homeowner in Hampshire; to stop disaster before it has a chance to strike!

Here are some key signs to look out for, that mean your tree might be a hazard:

  1. Leaning trunk: While some trees naturally grow at an angle, a sudden lean can indicate root problems or instability.

  2. Dead or hanging branches: These unstable limbs can fall unexpectedly, especially during windy weather.

  3. Cracks or splits in the trunk: Large cracks or splits can weaken your tree's structure. Sometimes they’re obvious, and sometimes not, so it’s important to check your tree regularly.

  4. Fungal growth: Mushrooms or other fungi at the tree's base might be a sign of decay within the trunk or roots. It’s always worth taking a snap and getting advice or investigating further.

  5. Exposed roots: If you notice roots lifting out of the ground or obviously damaged, the tree's stability might be compromised.

  6. Peeling bark or cavities: Large areas of missing bark or hollow sections in the trunk are big red flags.

  7. Signs of root rot: Look for soft, spongy soil around the base of the tree and if you suspect root rot might have set it, get in touch asap!

  8. Multiple trunks: Trees with V-shaped unions between trunks are more prone to splitting, so keep a close eye on these.

  9. Proximity to structures: Trees too close to your home, power lines, or other structures might well become hazardous as they grow. Make sure you trim them regularly to keep them a manageable size and avoid any potential problems.

  10. Recent changes: Any sudden changes in the tree's appearance or surrounding soil can indicate potential problems. We know it’s not always easy to remember what your tree looked like, an easy solution is to take a picture in every season to keep track!

Remember, these signs don't always mean a tree needs to be removed, so don’t panic! Often, proper pruning & care can really minimise the risk. But assessing tree safety requires expertise and training. In other words, get advice from someone who knows what they’re looking for!
